Piazza Sant’Antonio is the main square of Castelmola and the entrance to the village. From here you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama that includes Taormina with its castle and the Strait of Messina. The square was built in 1954 and has a beautiful mosaic pavement with alternating lava stones and white stones. Limestone benches in the same style as the pavement were also built on the tree-lined sidewalks. During the construction of Piazza Sant’Antonio, the ancient arch of Castelmola, now on the right, was isolated and placed on limestone steps. Near the arch is the ancient church of Sant’Antonio, now converted into an auditorium. Piazza Sant’Antonio is also overlooked by another symbol of Castelmola: the Antico Caffè San Giorgio. This is where almond wine, the typical product of the village, was born.
