In the Salita del Carmine of Taormina, just before arriving at the Cathedral of San Nicola, fragments of a Hellenistic mosaic can be seen. It was part of the external pavement of the peristyle of a private house and dates back to the II century BC. The dating was possible by comparing the technique and the elements of the representation with other existing examples in Athens, Delos and Eretria. The floor consists of pebbles of different colors, split and polished on the surface, and relatively large black and white polygonal tiles. The central panel depicts a geometric motif consisting of a double square and a six-petaled floral element inscribed on a black field. In the four corners, however, there are an equal number of darting dolphins.
