The Arco dell’Elefante (Arch of the Elephant), together with the Faraglione di Punta Tracino (Punta Tracino Stack), is one of the most famous landmarks of the island of Pantelleria. It is a rocky arch created by lava and its shape resembles the head of an elephant plunging its trunk into the water. The arch is located in the eastern part of the island near one of Pantelleria’s most strategic points, where Cala Levante and Cala Tramontana (Levante and Tramontana Coves) are located. On days when the sea is rough, it is always possible to swim in at least one of the two bays. The Arco dell’Elefante provides one of the easiest access points to the sea on Pantelleria, although it is always advisable to wear water shoes. The rocky coastline here is low and smooth. As a result, this area of the island can get very crowded, especially in August. If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Arco dell’Elefante more peacefully, it is advisable to arrive before ten in the morning.
