Sabbie Nere Beach

La spiaggia di Sabbie Nere sull'isola di Vulcano

The Sabbie Nere (Black Sands) beach, set in the beautiful Baia di Ponente (Western Bay), is certainly the most famous beach on the island of Vulcano. Its name is due to the distinctive colour of the fine sand that makes up the coastline and which is of volcanic origin. The beach is about one kilometre long, the seabed slopes gently towards the sea and there are several serviced lidos. It is, therefore, also perfect for families with children. The proximity to the two ports of Levante and Ponente means that, especially in August, the Sabbie Nere beach is very crowded. Its western orientation means that the sun can be enjoyed until sunset, when a wonderful play of colours is generated and everything around takes on an intense shade of red. It is advisable to wear dark swimming costumes because the black sand is so fine that it even gets into fabric!
