Piscina di Venere (Vulcano)

The Piscina di Venere (Venus Pool) is a beautiful natural pool located on the northwest coast of the island of Vulcano. It is a true natural amphitheatre, whose circular perimeter is marked by tuff and basalt rocks. This particular part of the island’s coastline is so called because, according to legend, this is where Venus, the goddess of Beauty, used to come to bathe and swim. The other name given to the Piscina di Venere on Vulcano is Bagno delle Vergini (Bath of the Virgins). This is because, by immersing herself in these waters every evening, the goddess regained the virginity she had lost to her many lovers before joining her husband, the god Vulcan. The Piscina di Venere can only be reached by boat using one of the many organised excursions. Another of Vulcano’s highlights is located in the same bay on the island: the Grotta del Cavallo.
