The Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Taormina is located in Corso Umberto, just in front of Palazzo Corvaja. The building was built in the first half of the 1600’s on the remains of the Roman Odeon, which can still be seen in the rear part of the church. The entrance portal is made of pink marble from Taormina and above it, in a niche, there is a statue of St. Catherine, sculpted in 1705. The interior of the church has a single nave with a wooden beam ceiling. On the right side, above a column, there is another marble statue of Santa Caterina dating back to 1493. During the restoration of the church in the 1970s, a crypt and the remains of walls and pavements from the Greco-Roman period were discovered.
