The former convent of San Tomaso di Noto is an imposing building located in the upper part of the city, also known as Piano Alto. Today, together with two other buildings built later, it is the seat of the Noto prison. The convent was built in 1720 to a design by Rosario Gagliardi. The trapezoidal staircase leading to the entrance was built in the 19th century after the lowering of the street level. The main façade, rich in baroque windows and friezes, has two orders. The portal is framed by fluted pilasters that support the entablature decorated with bas-relief carved frets. In some episodes of Commissario Montalbano, the former convent of San Tommaso di Noto became the prison of Vigata.
