The Church of Montevergine in Noto, with its typical concave dome, is certainly one of the symbols of the city. Together with via Nicolaci, it forms a truly splendid setting that becomes the protagonist every year during the Infiorata di Noto. Inside there is a permanent exhibition on the fraternities of Noto.
History and architecture of the church of Montevergine di Noto
The construction of the church of Montevergine di Noto began in 1695 and was completed in 1762. The building, attributed to the architect Vincenzo Sinatra, also included a convent that was destroyed in 1938. The façade of the church, with its peculiar concave shape, has no baroque decoration, but a simple, symmetrical linear architecture with two lateral bell towers. The façade of the church completes the scenery of Via Nicolaci, which is colored every year during the Infiorata di Noto.
Inside and artworks
The interior of the church of Montevergine di Noto has a single nave and still preserves the splendid original 18th century majolica floor. Along the walls there are half Corinthian columns, surmounted in the arches by stucco and half reliefs of angels holding shields. The paintings on the vault and on the four side altars are attributed to Costantino Carasi. The highlight of the church of Montevergine di Noto is undoubtedly the splendid altar in polychrome marble. On its sides there are two beautiful statues of angels holding two candlesticks. Inside the church there is a permanent exhibition about the six brotherhoods of Noto. You can admire: the different uniforms, insignia, banners and much more.
